Tea Story: Winnipeg

March 6, 2011 at 2:43 pm 19 comments

so i was on the bus going to school a couple of weeks ago. when i noticed that a tea shop is opening up in Osborne Village. It’s called Tea Story… and i dont know anything about it! i dont see anything when i google, and come on does it even exist if you cant google it?!?! the sign for the place looks pretty slick all black with white letters and a green tea leaf. actually at first glance it looks like an H&R block. but this isn’t so much a post to inform though it may for some people who didnt know about it in the first place. this is more for the people out there that may know something about this. i’m reaching out to the Winnipeg tea community. so tell me more!

Well this “tea story” place is now open, thinking it might be a great new hangout my girlfriend and I went to check it out. To say that we were sadly dissappointed is an understatement. The set up looks nice- retro-trendy, maybe a little too colourful. The menu is on large cardboard leaning up against the front counter on the floor which makes it difficult to read when other people may be standing in front. Then the service…. oh where do I begin? They burnt my girlfriends waffle and us being the only customers in their shop, it took an unbelievably long time to get the waffle made – probably because the two idiots behind the counter didnt seem to know how to use the waffle maker or where their utensils were to begin with it. The waffle itself was extremely bland – no taste not to mention the fact it was burnt and dry to begin with….Customer service was no better, the person who took my order charged me for a waffle that was already previously paid for. If you’ve only got two customers in your store, how difficult is it to pay attention!!!!! Well I guess its needless to say that my friend and I had a terrible ‘tea story’ to tell and will not be returning to this place, and highly recommend that other people avoid it as well!!

Hi Fibi: Thanks for your comments and it really helps us to know where to improve. Sorry for the menu board being on the floor for the first 3 days, it’s the temporary at that time due to the materials were arrived in late, which is also unexpected to us, and we tried our best to fix the issue in 3 days and now it’s up on the wall, yap~~~
Please accept my apology for my staff at early stage, the waffle makers are heavy duty commercial equipment and needs a while to get pre-heated, our staff might be accidently turn them off and got nervous overall and made the waffle a bit over done. I already Please don’t be negative on us and come back with your girlfriend, enjoy a meal on us, to make sure I will be there for you, let me know when you want to drop by or email to TeaStory@hotmail.ca, thanks!

I went to tea story today and it’s a really neat place with a great concept…a had a couple of thoughts if I may share them…I will definately be coming back to try so waffles…but I would have NEVER guessed that something like that would be so significant in the menu by the name “Tea Story”, which I think is a shame, as people might not come in for tea…but they would love the idea of sweet or savoury waffles! Love the decor and the location (as much as parking to just grab a tea quickly is a bit of puzzle at times. The one thing I miss though, being used to the usual/boring old highly commercial coffee/tea houses….is a place that holds sugar/honey/milk where I can adjust the flavours to suit my prefernce.
Just a couple of my thoughts. :-)
Love the concept, can’t wait to go back!

Wow! I really loved this place! The interior design was outstanding! My sister and I were pretty tempted to ask where they got their chairs from so we could copy the look! The staff was knowledgeable and extremely funny! The guy at the counter made me laugh so hard I almost cried :) The suggested tea, berry bounty, made my heart melt. The guy at the counter suggested taking it with the sugar crystals (which are super cute!), but I wanted to try it without them. He was right, it’s better with a bit of sugar, but it was still really great regardless!

I tried the lemon cheesecake waffle – which is just as good as it sounds. He first suggested the Death for Chocolate, but I’m not really big on chocolate, so we settled on the cheesecake instead.

Also, the teacups are to die for :)

If the owner is reading this, can you please tell me if you’ll be selling the teas to bring home (like the tea leaves) and where I can purchase a tea set like the kind you have? (The tea set with the clear glass teapots, the heart teapot stand with candle and the round clear cups). Also, where can I purchase the tables?

The staff was really the best part, they seemed like they genuinely loved being there and made my experience enjoyable. At one moment the boy and girl were dancing to the music together while making my drink – to which I gleefully joined in!

The only criticisms I have are the following:
I’d like if you sold the tea to take home (I want Berry Bounty every day!)
I’d like there to be wifi, I live in the area and it would be nice to be able to do homework over a cup of tea.
Maybe you could have a specials board?

I don’t mean to criticize! It’s really my new favourite place! I just think that IF there were improvements to be made it would be those things.

Love the ball chairs they have by the windows, very enjoyable environment with music and free magazine to read. Once a while, the server will bring some free samples around and taste very good, can’t believe place like this, still get some criticism??? Sandwich waffle is amazing, very tasty and big, totally inexpensive (~$6 or 7). Love their real fruit bubble tea, I have tried hundreds of bubble tea before and I finally found the best bubble tea in town, it’s here!! Highly recommend!

Wow I’ve been wondering about this place for ages. I’ve seen it from the time it was still under construction to when it finally opened when I use to take the bus to and from school. I will leave my comment here or on another thread soon. Thanks for comments, it helps to know what’s good about a certain new place.
